The City of Alameda was incorporated on December 27, 1884, and boomed after a tidal canal, known as the Oakland Estuary, was built to link Oakland's harbor with the San Leandro Bay. A number of marine-related industries sprouted along the narrow channel, including shipbuilding firms during World War II. The important role that Alameda has played in American Naval power is alive today as the aircraft carrier USS HORNET is moored at historic Alameda Point on San Francisco Bay. The Hornet is a national treasure, having participated in two of the greatest events of the 20th century – World War II and the Apollo 11 manned space mission.

The Bay Area is very deserving of its reputation as one of the premier locations to live in America. Alameda offers easy access to all that the Bay Area has to offer including nightlife, professional sports, golf, water sports and some of the most-well known views in the country. Alameda is also nearby to Berkeley, home to the University of California, which has earned its reputation as one of the best public universities in the country. The county and Alameda are home to an involved and active population that with Berkeley has been at the crux of major cultural and political movements over the last century. Colleges and universities within Alameda include Alameda College and Alliant University.

Alameda is an architecturally and historically rich community with over 10,000 buildings constructed prior to 1930. Alameda Historical Museum is a major historical attraction. And the Crab Cove Visitor Center attracts many residents and visitors alike. With proximity to the bay, windsurfing is often seen from the shores of Alameda. Alameda also is home to Chuck Corica Golf Complex, which serves more rounds of golf than any other golf complex in the East Bay. Sailing is convenient from one of the town’s multiple Marinas.
